Florida’s JUNO BEACH – David Ford has played in a number of notable games during his brief but an illustrious amateur career.
But his round on Monday at the venerable Seminole Golf Club has perhaps surpassed them all.
The North Carolina sophomore didn’t have much time to reflect because he had just signed the scorecard for his unbelievable 10-under 62 in the second round of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup. But the likelihood is high that he will keep the golf ball from this one.
Considering how uneasy I was, Ford claimed that this might have been his best game ever. I think I managed myself and the jitters well and got a poor score it because I had a lot of long delays on the course and there were some rulings in front of me.
Are you anxious, ACC Freshman of the Year? During Monday’s marathon day, when the majority of the field completed 36 holes, Ford and his fellow Tar Heels were cruising early and frequently. Ford, meanwhile, didn’t really take off until the par-5 ninth hole.
He had recently missed four shots from 12 feet or less in a row, the first three for birdies and the ninth for eagle. He then also made a birdie on holes 10 and 11.
Ford remarked, “That one really had me going.”
After making his fourth consecutive birdie, David Ford, who was now in the lead, was met by television cameras as he approached the tee box on the par-3 13th hole.
Ford’s stomach began to churn and his legs began to become a touch unsteady as he waited 15 minutes for a teammate in front to receive a ruling.
In the back of her mind, Ford said, “I knew I was on Golf Channel, so I imagined my phone may be blowing up.” “Holy cow,” I was like, “I’m 7 or 8 under and I missed four 12-footers in a row in the middle of the round. It wasn’t like scary, but I was really nervous because I was hitting it amazing, but I left so many out there.”
What then did he do? He misfired on his tee shot and made his fifth consecutive birdie. Ford racked up eight straight birdies by the time the wild stretch was through.
And all of a sudden, he was aiming for the course record.
