BMW PGA Championship: A trio of players—Tommy Fleetwood, Andy Sullivan, and Viktor Hovland—share the lead after a low-scoring first round.
In wet conditions at Wentworth, Fleetwood finished with six birdies in his final seven holes to finish with a bogey-free 64. However, Sullivan moved up to catch up to him after making up for an opening-hole bogey by making nine birdies and reaching eight under.
When Hovland scored a long-range eagle at the par-five 18th, it created a three-way tie for the lead. England’s Matt Jordan, who had six birdies in a seven-hole stretch to finish at seven-under 65, was one shot back in fourth place.
Following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the play was called off for the day soon after 6:30 p.m. local time, with 30 golfers remaining on the course. There won’t be a play on Friday, according to the DP World Tour.
Along with Jason Scrivener, Marcus Armitage, and Fabrizio Zanotti, Shane Lowry, who plays with Fleetwood, had a flawless 66 to move within two strokes of the early lead. Rasmus Hojgaard was five under par for the day with one hole remaining when play was suspended.
Both of the 15 players who participated in the LIV Golf event last week in Boston, Abraham Ancer and Bernd Wiesberger, produced opening-round scores of 68. The defending winner Billy Horschel and the newly crowned FedExCup champion Rory McIlroy are also in the group four off the lead.
With two holes remaining, Eddie Pepperell was in the group on four under, five strokes ahead of Ian Poulter, Tyrrell Hatton, and US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick, who had all shot opening-round 69s.
