The BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth will take place this September, and live coverage of the event, according to Rory McIlroy and the defending champion Shane Lowry.
The current Race to Dubai champion placed second to Lowry in last year’s competition and has four other top-10 finishes at the DP World Tour’s marquee event.
The previous week, McIlroy had already committed to competing in the Irish Open. The back-to-back DP World Tour tournaments would serve as his penultimate opportunity to practise for the Ryder Cup, which he would likely play in for Team Europe for the eighth time in a row later that month in Italy.
In the past, McIlroy remarked, “I’ve had some amazing outcomes and performances on the West Course.” He added, “I always love playing at the BMW PGA Championship. I started 2023 with a victory in Dubai, and I’d like to add another title at Wentworth.”
McIlroy was in excellent form when he last played at Wentworth in September. He had won the Dubai Desert Classic to kick off 2023 and had won the PGA Tour’s FedExCup title a month earlier.
To defend his title from September 14–17, Lowry, who beat McIlroy and Jon Rahm by a single stroke in 2022, announced earlier this month. More players are expected to be revealed in the following months.
The BMW PGA Championship was at the top of Lowry’s list of competitions that he wanted to win, as he had stated the previous year.

Lowry remarked, “I can’t wait to return to Wentworth as the defending champion. That was a special week, and I’m eager to repeat the experience in September.”
The first event of the week is the G4D Tour @ BMW PGA Championship, where some of the top golfers with disabilities will compete for the season’s second-to-last G4D Tour title.
