Masters Champion: After controlling his early rage, new Masters champion Jon Rahm will go on to become one of golf’s all-time greats, according to major-winning instructor Butch Harmon.
Rahm finished four strokes ahead of LIV Golf’s Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson at Augusta National to become the fourth Spanish to win the Green Jacket, after two-time winners Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal and one-time winner Sergio Garcia.
The 28-year-old, who trailed Koepka by two strokes going into the final round, fired a three-under 69 on Sunday to win his sixth tournament in 13 starts, his sixth major title (after the 2021 US Open), and to guarantee that he would replace Scottie Scheffler as the world’s top player.
Rahm was criticised by Harmon on Sky Sports Golf “He’s going to become one of the best golfers the game has ever seen [by controlling his fire]. He is fully equipped.
“He drives it on the fairways and hits it on the greens. He is strong and long. He makes wonderful putts. The only thing preventing him before was his inability to manage his emotions. The future’s biggest star is this man.”
In the final round, Rahm seized the lead after the first six holes and never lost it.
Harmon continued: “He was there in case something went wrong. Koepka made some errors, and he profited from them.
The announcer remarked, “Jon kept hitting the fairways and greens, which is what it takes to win a terrific championship.”
“He stepped up and showed why, in my opinion, he has been the world’s best player for the previous few years. incredibly unique; exceptional.
Faldo: Rahm never got angry.
Sir Nick Faldo, a three-time winner of the Masters, said of Rahm: “Physically he is a strong guy and technically he has his own peculiar golf swing, [but] intellectually look at how he has grown over the years.”
