Charles Schwab Cup: Despite winning the Charles Schwab Cup Championship by seven shots, Padraig Harrington nearly missed finishing first in the Schwab Cup standings at the end of the PGA Tour Champions season.
The three-time major champion shot a bogey-free 65 at Phoenix Country Club and added three more birdies in a five-hole stretch on his back nine to win by a wide margin over his nearest rival Alex Cejka.
Harrington finished the week at 27 under par, matching Jack Nicklaus’ score from the Kaulig Companies Championship in 1990. The Irishman also broke the 72-hole scoring record for the PGA Tour Champions with 257 shots over the four days.
Even though the 51-year-old won, Steven Alker of New Zealand, who came in third and finished eight strokes back of the winner, retained the top spot in the season-long standings.
Harrington remarked, “That provides a certain degree of stress and focus because I knew I had to win to give myself a shot in the Charles Schwab Cup. “I’m pleased that I was able to win the competition from that position.
“That gives me a little more hope for the future. It feels good to triumph a fourth time this year. As a result, it ends a fantastic year for many of us who have won four times.
ALL the feels.

Alker needed a top-five finish in the season finale to win the Charles Schwab Cup in his first complete season. He shot his second consecutive 68 on Sunday and finished at 19 under.
It’s not like he suddenly won the Schwab Cup at the end of the year after winning a few tournaments, according to Harrington. “From the beginning of the year till the end, he has been under pressure.
“He had a lead, and during the year, some of us were catching him. That he not only held on but also won in style is quite commendable.
