DP World Tour: At the ISPS Handa Championship in Japan, Grant Forrest of Scotland shot the round-of-the-day 62 to take a share of the lead.
In a strong second round at PGM Ishioka GC, Forrest combined nine birdies with one bogey to tie Jazz Janewattananond and Lucas Herbert for the lead at 10 under.
Starting on the back nine, Forrest took advantage of the par-five 16th hole and added another at the 18th to make the turn in 30 after making three birdies in his first five holes.
Forrest said, “I didn’t know where I was until the last green and I thought, ‘Well, this is for a 62.’ Just kept working all day. Yesterday, I made a couple of rolls but didn’t really hole any putts.”
Janewattananond finished with four birdies in his final five holes to finish with a seven-under 63. Herbert equalled that score with nine birdies and two bogeys, while Max Kieffer of Germany is one shot back in fourth place heading into the weekend.
Janewattananond praised his conclusion, saying, “That was great. It started out slowly but picked up speed, and I had a strong finish. I’m not as stressed, feeling nice, and at ease on the golf field.”
After shooting a four-under 66 to tie for eighth place with Takumi Kanaya and Deon Germishuys, England’s Jordan Smith is two shots back. Overnight leader Andy Sullivan is in the group three shots back with Rafa Cabrera Bello and Rasmus Hojgaard.
Ernie Els, a former major champion, shot a hole-out eagle from a bunker in the second round to move to four under par. Christiaan Bezuidenhout, the tournament favourite, missed the cut after shooting rounds of 70 and 71.
At the halfway point of the ISPS Handa Championship, Grant Forrest, Jazz Janewattananond, Lucas Herbert, and Max Kieffer are in first, second, and third place, respectively.
