Golf News: Gary Player will face off in court against his own relatives.
The 87-year-old, according to the Palm Beach Post, first sued his son Marc Player in May in Palm Beach County before suing his grandson Damian Player separately in November.
The senior Player claims that the two violated an agreement that called for the return of the memorabilia to the nine-time major champion by selling or attempting to sell it.
Stuart Singer, Gary Player’s attorney, told the Palm Beach Post that Gary had to pursue his rights in this way “only with the greatest reluctance and after many years of trying to avoid this.”
According to court documents, a large portion of Gary Player’s memorabilia was sold in a 2021 auction against his wishes. This included his 1974 Masters trophy, which brought in $523,483, his South African Open Trophy, which brought in $48,841, his 1965 U.S. Open irons, which brought in $17,947, and his 52nd Masters golf shoes, which brought in $1,171.
Damian Player was involved in a different lawsuit because it was claimed that he tried to find purchasers for memorabilia that was kept in 19 lockers at a South Carolina storage facility. Additionally, it is claimed that he assisted in the sale of numerous Rolex watches to a Florida resident “for considerable sums of money.”
One of Gary’s six children, Marc, is accused of failing to provide his father access to his social media accounts and the website domain GaryPlayer.com, according to the lawsuit.
Gary Player said on his Twitter account in August that the selling of his memorabilia was not permitted.
The response came from Marc’s lawyer, Darren Heitner, and was shared by Marc on Twitter.
Heitner asserted in a statement that the litigation is still in its “infancy” and that the 2021 settlement is unlawful since the property rights are held by a trust.
Gary and Marc have, however, engaged in court disputes before.
In a lawsuit filed in 2020 about unpaid royalties from the Gary Player Group, which Marc Player runs, Gary Player was awarded $5 million. In addition, Gary Player bought back the company’s rights to use his name and likeness.
Furthermore, Wayne Player, the oldest son of Gary Player, was disqualified from the Masters in 2021 after promoting a golf ball manufacturer at the ceremonial opening tee shot for Lee Elder, the first Black golfer to compete at Augusta National.
