Golf News: Xander Schauffele won the JP McManus Pro-Am by a single stroke, while Tiger Woods improved his performance ahead of The 150th Open.
Schauffele followed up his course-record 64 on the first day with a two-under 70 on Tuesday at Adare Manor, mixing three birdies with a bogey and finishing with 11 straight pars to set the clubhouse target.
The Olympic gold medalist was then left to wait for several hours to see if any of the afternoon waves could match his total in the 36-hole competition, which raised money for charities in Ireland, with Schauffele’s score good enough for a one-shot victory.
Sam Burns shot a final-round seven-under 65 to finish second on nine-under, with Ireland’s Shane Lowry a stroke back in third after a final-round 67.
Burns followed a front-nine 33 with three birdies in a five-hole stretch beginning with the 11th to keep his title hopes alive, though a final-hole birdie left him a shot behind Schuaffele’s score.
Lowry was two shots off the lead with six holes to play and followed a bogey at the 14th with a birdie at the par-four 16th, only to par his final three holes and finish the week on eight under.
Tyrrell Hatton needed a final-hole eagle to tie Schauffele, but bogeyed the last to finish fourth with a final-round 69, while Padraig Harrington birdied his final two holes to match the course record.
Rory McIlroy finished the week in a tie for sixth place, five strokes behind Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas, after playing the final four holes in four under par.
Woods, who used a golf cart to move between holes due to the injuries he sustained in a car accident last February, made back-to-back birdies from the 15th but bogeyed the last to finish with a second-round 74.
Woods finished tied-39th in a group that included US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick, and he plans to play more rounds in Ireland in the coming days before competing in The 150th Open at St Andrew’s next week.
Many of the JP McManus Pro-Am field will now travel to Scotland for the Genesis Scottish Open, with 14 of the world’s top 15 set to compete at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick for the first time in an event co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and PGA Tour.
