PGA Tour: Denny McCarthy has a two-shot lead following a low-scoring first round at the Travellers Championship, while Rory McIlroy has his first PGA Tour hole-in-one.
McCarthy shot a bogey-free 60 on the par-70 layout at TPC River Highlands, the site of Jim Furyk’s record ’58 round’ in 2016, to lead the field ahead of major winners Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley.
McIlroy sits on two under par with Xander Schauffele and US Open winner Wyndham Clark, after a hole-in-one at the par-three eighth, as well as five birdies and five bogeys during an entertaining first round.
McCarthy began his round with four consecutive birdies and two-putted from 60 feet to pick up another at the 15th after driving the par-four green, then began his second nine with three consecutive birdies.
The American went up and down from off the sixth green for his ninth birdie of the day, moving into sole possession of the lead, before nearly holing his approach into the last green to set up a closing birdie.
Scott birdied four holes in a row from the second and made up for a bogey at the seventh by picking up a stroke at the ninth, turning in a 31. He then stormed up the leaderboard with five straight birdies from the 11th.
The 2013 Masters champion’s dreams of a sub-60 round were dashed when his approach into the par-five 17th struck the water, but the Australian birdied the last to join Bradley on eight under.
Bradley had threatened a record round himself when, starting on the back nine, he birdied his first five holes and added three more in a five-hole run from the 17th, with the 2011 PGA winner wiping out a bogey at the fifth with a 20-footer at the seventh.
Scottie Scheffler’s opening-round 63, which left him in fourth position, includes four birdies in the final six holes, while Shane Lowry sits within four of the early lead after a blemish-free 64.
