The Open: Rail strikes announced by the RMT union are anticipated to disrupt fans attending The Open and the last two Ashes Tests.
The RMT said that its 20,000 members from 14 railway operating firms would strike on July 20, 22, and 29 as part of a continued struggle for fairer wages.
The Open Championship is held at Royal Liverpool from July 20 to 23, while the fourth Ashes Test is held at Old Trafford from July 19 to 23, and the fifth Test is held at the Oval from July 27 to 31.
The union, which concluded a similar issue with Network Rail three months ago, said that the businesses had not made a fresh compensation offer.
The RMT’s leadership said the government was preventing a fair settlement just hours after the Bank of England indicated bigger pay awards were fueling inflation.
“This latest phase of action will show the country just how important railway staff are to the running of the rail industry,” RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said.
“My team of negotiators and I are available for talks with train operating companies and government ministers 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“Yet, incredibly, neither party has made any attempt to arrange meetings or put forward a reasonable offer that could help us reach a negotiated solution.
“The government continues to shackle the companies and refuses to allow them to present a package that could resolve this dispute.
“Our members have now voted three times in the last year to strike, the most recent of which coincided with receiving full details of the rail operators’ substandard offer.
“They voted by a 9-1 margin to renew their strike mandate, and RMT will continue its industrial campaign until we reach a negotiated settlement on pay, working conditions, and job security.”
The RMT claims that its rail strike campaign, which began in June 2022, has prevented managers from imposing layoffs and contentious policies such as widespread ticket office closures.
The current round of rail strikes, which included the drivers’ union Aslef, targeted passengers heading to the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool and, later, the FA Cup final at Wembley.
