The Open: Cameron Smith acknowledged that “keyboard warriors” and a “frustrating” post-win news conference regarding his possible transfer to LIV Golf overshadowed his first major triumph at The Open.
Smith will defend his title at Royal Liverpool this month, after shooting a final-round 64 at St Andrews to win by one stroke over Cameron Young last year.
The week was dominated by rumours about the next wave of players expected to join the Saudi-backed LIV circuit, with Smith left dissatisfied when asked about his own golfing future immediately following his triumph.
“It was definitely, I guess, a frustrating media conference after The Open,” Smith remarked ahead of the next LIV Golf tournament, which begins on Friday at the Centurion Club.
“Perhaps a little overshadowed by the fact that I’d just won the biggest tournament I’d ever played in and someone asked that, but looking back, it’s just a guy trying to do his job.”
“I suppose it was a little bit tougher from then on, especially while making the decision. Just some unpleasant stuff shouted by the keyboard warriors, I suppose. I knew it was going to be difficult, but I believe I made the correct decision.”
Smith completed the PGA Tour season before joining LIV Golf at the conclusion of the FedExCup playoffs, becoming the highest-ranked player to join the then-rival circuit, and winning the LIV Golf Chicago tournament in his second appearance.
LIV Golf is ‘not going anywhere’
Following the unprecedented deal between Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and golf’s circuits, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan earlier stated that he could not “see a scenario” in which LIV would continue in its current configuration beyond this season.
During the Betfred British Masters last week, Sir Nick Faldo shared Monahan’s sentiments, saying he believed the tour will go away, while Smith believes the circuit would remain.
