US Open: Rory McIlroy is still in contention for his first major title since 2014, having moved within a stroke of the lead heading into the final round of the 123rd US Open.
The four-time major champion carded a one-under 69 at Los Angeles Country Club, moving him up to third place after Rickie Fowler’s late blunder left him and Wyndham Clark level for the lead heading into the final day.
Fowler was two shots ahead until a two-shot swing at the par-four last saw him three-putt for bogey and Clark makes birdie, leaving the duo on 10 under. McIlroy will face world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in the final round as he attempts to break his nine-year major drought.
Scheffler finished with an eagle-birdie to salvage a two-under 68 and get within three shots of the lead, while Harris English in fifth, ahead of Dustin Johnson and Xander Schauffele.
On Saturday, players made the following moves
McIlroy hit a 388-yard drive and scored a tap-in birdie at the par-five first after missing the 15-foot eagle effort, while Fowler birdied the first but bogeyed the next after a poor tee shot.
The Northern Irishman briefly tied the lead when he rolled in from 12 feet at the third, while Fowler failed to convert from seven feet, as Clark surged into a solitary lead with two birdies in his first three holes.
Fowler bogeyed the fifth and joined his playing companion in failing to birdie the short par-four sixth, giving Clark a two-shot lead, only to nail a 35-footer at the seventh to close the gap to one on 10 under.
McIlroy had superb saves at the seventh and tenth holes but lost a 12-foot birdie chance for a share of the lead at the 12th.
When Clark failed to get up and down from the sand to preserve par at the 11th, Fowler surged back into a share of the lead. Clark then fluffed a shot from just off the following green and posted another bogey.
