Ryder Cup: After ending his four-and-a-half-year winless streak on the PGA Tour at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Rickie Fowler has set his sights on a Ryder Cup return for Team USA.
On the final day at Detroit Golf Club, Fowler shot a bogey-free 68 before beating Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin in a play-off for his sixth PGA Tour victory and first since the WM Phoenix Open in February 2019.
The 34-year-old’s victory caps a hard climb back to the winner’s circle after slumping to world No. 185 as recently as last September, with Fowler finishing in the top 20 in nine of his previous ten PGA Tour outings prior to his spectacular victory.
Fowler’s victory lifts him up to 12th in the Ryder Cup qualification standings, with the American eyeing a sixth trip for Team USA this September after missing out on the record-breaking 2021 competition.
“Definitely one of the main goals this year was to win,” Fowler remarked at the tournament’s conclusion. “Aside from that, obviously, I’ve been playing well and doing what I’ve been doing to get to the Tour Championship.
“One of our ultimate goals was to be a part of the Ryder Cup team, and that’s still something we’re working on right now. I’ve been a part of a few, and they’re all extremely special weeks, so that’s where I’m looking.”
Fowler had been in the top ten at the Charles Schwab Challenge and The Memorial before losing out on the US Open and Travellers Championship after dismal Sundays, giving him plenty of recent experience to draw on during the final round of his triumph.
“Any prior situation helps, but the more recent, the better,” Fowler noted. “I’ve been in contention many times and won, but I’ve also not played well or been close and failed to convert.
“With the US Open in Los Angeles and the Travellers Championship last week, I definitely felt better and played better, but I didn’t score.”
“It definitely helped going into today knowing that I didn’t have to be perfect, just keep doing what we’ve been doing. As I already stated, I thought we did an excellent job overall, with the exception of a couple missed opportunities on the back nine.”
