DP World Tour: At the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship later this month, Henrik Stenson will make his first appearance on the DP World Tour since joining LIV Golf and losing his position as Ryder Cup captain.
Since missing the cut in the Scottish Open and leaving early from the Open Championship, which he won in 2016, Stenson has not competed on the top European golf tour.
Stenson’s term as Ryder Cup captain lasted just 127 days when, five days later, he was fired as captain with immediate effect for his choice to play in the LIV Golf series, which was sponsored by Saudi Arabia.
The 46-year-old received £3.3 million for winning his first LIV competition in Next Jersey on July 31, and Luke Donald was named as the new Ryder Cup captain the following day.
On the recently revealed entry list for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Stenson and Donald are both included, along with several LIV players like Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, and former Masters champion Patrick Reed.
Members who participated in LIV Golf competitions were suspended from the PGA Tour, while a ban from the Genesis Scottish Open imposed by the DP World Tour was later reversed after an appeal.
Sport Resolutions, a UK-based dispute resolution service, will hear the full appeal next month. The outcome will essentially determine whether the Tour has the right to penalise LIV golfers for participating in “conflicting events” without authorization or whether they can compete and thus maintain their Ryder Cup eligibility.
Adrian Otaegui of Spain, who has participated in four LIV tournaments, now holds an automatic qualifying spot for this year’s competition in Rome, largely because of his triumph at the Andalucia Masters at Valderrama.
