Honda Classic: The three highest-ranked golfers competing at PGA National this week for the Honda Classic are Sungjae Im, Billy Horschel, and Shane Lowry;
In order to improve on a “disappointing” field and draw more of the top players back to the Honda Classic, Billy Horschel thinks the PGA Tour calendar needs to be changed.
With no top-10 players competing at one of the tour’s most recognisable locations, Honda finishes its 42-year stint as a title sponsor this week.
That’s large because the Genesis Invitational, one of the new “elevated” events this year, comes after the Honda Classic, which is played before both The Players and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Sungjae Im, the world’s No. 18, will take the lead in the “Florida Swing,” which will begin at PGA National on Thursday and be broadcast live on Sky Sports. Horschel also participates in a stretch of five straight tournaments to avoid skipping the last South Florida event of the year.
Horschel said on Wednesday, “I’m kind of disappointed in the PGA Tour in that – I’m not going to say they didn’t prioritise the Honda Classic, they prioritise every sponsor that we have. “It’s never easy to please everyone when there are 47 different sponsors on the PGA Tour and ‘X’ number of partners on the PGA Tour.
“But, this was a popular event when I first started my career and went on tour. All 20 of the top players in the world were present. Playing was allowed at this occasion. The tournament subsequently went out of favour over time, with scheduling being the main factor in why it didn’t attract as strong of a field anymore.”
Honda made the decision to stop serving as the event’s title sponsor known last year. Although a new sponsor has not been announced, Horschel claimed that the PGA Tour has assured him that the site will continue to host an event.
