International Crown England: Georgia Hall and Charley Hull have come under fire from Bronte Law and Jodi Ewart Shadoff for their untimely withdrawals from Team England’s lineup for this week’s Hanwha Lifeplus International Crown.
The two top-ranked players for England have withdrawn from the tournament, according to the tournament’s administrators, with Hall citing a foot ailment and Hall withdrawing due to illness.
Players from the Ladies European Tour Alice Hewson and Liz Young, who were late additions to England’s roster, will be making their competitive debuts in the eight-team competition. Law is dissatisfied with Hall and Hull’s lack of communication regarding their withdrawals from the competition.
In her pre-tournament press conference, Law responded when asked how she learned of the withdrawals of her Solheim Cup teammates: “Through Chinese whispers if you’d like to call it that. I never heard anything from the two that choose not to play. I felt let down by that.
“I believe that anyone with a modicum of decency would inform their teammates that they wouldn’t be arriving rather than waiting to hear from other players on the tour who overheard them saying things during the tournament last week. That isn’t too much to ask, in my opinion.”
Due to the two withdrawals, Ewart Shadoff is now the highest-ranked player on Team England, according to Law, who stated that she later received a message from Hull apologising for not being able to play.
Ewart Shadoff stated, “Obviously it’s disappointing, especially to come so late. I’m sure Hanwha will be particularly disappointed. We’re all just incredibly grateful to be here because of what they’ve done for the tournament and to bring it back, in my opinion.
“Despite having spent over half of my life in the US, I still feel just as patriotic when I don the England flag as I did when I first wore it at the age of 12.
“Being here this week is the only commitment I’ve made to my calendar this year, especially the first half since playing for England means so much to me. Just a privilege, really. I’m honoured to be here and pleased to be a member of this group.”
