PNC Debut: Will McGee, age 11, is what Annika Sorenstam calls a “golf fanatic,” so it goes without saying that he was overjoyed to finally meet one of his idols, Tiger Woods, last Saturday night before Woods took part in the most recent edition of The Match.
Woods introduced himself as “Tiger” to McGee as they shook hands.
Good to see you, said Woods. “How are you doing?”
It’s a typical query among golfers. Woods, though, had a special reason to inquire because both he and McGee are taking part in this week’s PNC Championship, which is being held this weekend in Orlando, Florida. Once more, Woods will play alongside Charlie, his 13-year-old son. Following Sorenstam’s prior matches with her father, Tom, McGee gets his first opportunity as his mother’s partner.
It was cool to meet Woods. But competing with him?
That sort of behaviour automatically establishes one as the coolest student in the class.
Sorenstam spoke to GolfChannel.com about Will’s significant PNC debut during the media day for the LPGA’s season opener at her home club, Lake Nona Golf and Country Club, last month.
She remarked, “It’s amazing how excited he is. He told me, “Mommy, in a few weeks I’ll be putting with Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. He’s a golf nut, a golf fan, he watches everything, and for him to be part of this event and have his name in a press release with Tiger, it’s his dream.” We were there [at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club] before Thanksgiving playing. What a dream, indeed! And I’m just happy to be there with him.
Sorenstam has increased her level of competitive golf over the last couple of years, but she insists that these days, her son’s game is more important to her than her own. Will had been urging his mother to give him the call ever since seeing Charlie Woods perform at the PNC the previous two years. Will, who participated in his inaugural U.S. Kids Golf World Championship at Pinehurst earlier this year, was prepared this year, according to Sorenstam.
