Quintuple-Bogey: After a two-month break from competition, world No. 1 Jin Young Ko shot 80 in the first round of the BMW Ladies Championship.
At Oak Valley Country Club in Wonju, South Korea, Ko, the competition’s defending champion, had three birdies and two bogeys during her first nine holes. But her back nine was terrible, and she fell to almost the bottom of the leaderboard.
Ko finished her round with a 10 on the par-5 18th after bogeying holes Nos. 10 through 14. Ko was in a hazardous position after missing her tee shot and hitting a provisional, according to the Golf Channel broadcast, and she played her fourth ball (with the penalty) left-handedly from there.
She needed eight shots to get to the green. Although the final two putts weren’t seen during the broadcast, you can see Ko’s problems on the 18th hole below:
Ko, who finished 76th out of 78 players, told the Yonhap News Agency of South Korea, “Golf can be like this.” The way I want things to go doesn’t always happen. I gave it my best effort. Whatever the end result, it’s up to me to accept it and choose how I can improve. I’ll make an effort to maintain my optimism while I prepare for the upcoming rounds.
Due to a sore left wrist that has bothered her since last season, Ko is playing in her first LPGA event since late August.
In order to retake the world No. 1 position from Nelly Korda and win Player of the Year honours in 2021, she won five LPGA championships over the final few months of the year, including this one last year.
