Latest Golf News: Failure is not deadly, according to Winston Churchill, it’s the guts to carry on that matters.
Travis Vick, a talented golfer at the University of Texas, was slated to make his non-major PGA Tour debut this week in the Houston Open in his hometown. Vick, 22, was granted an exemption to the World Wide Technology Championship in Mayakoba, the Tour stop from last week, a few weeks ago.
Vick missed the cut with 80-75 shots. It’s been a different tale, though, a week later. Vick improved on a few of his errors and started with a 2-under 68 in Houston. He is currently three shots behind the first-day lead.
When you run out of golf balls, Vick remarked, “it’s sort of hard to play golf,” because he lost all of his last week in the mangroves. I’ve been having a little trouble with my swing this week, so my swing coach came down and is now sitting on the bag. We have therefore been working very hard over the past few days to identify and treat some characteristics that have persisted throughout tournament play.
“I’ve had to make adjustments and figure out what’s actually going on and I think we’re headed in the right direction,” the shooter said. “There’s a difference between hitting it well on the range and going out in competition with different sightlines.”
Vick, the low amateur at the 2022 U.S. Open, made adjustments mid-round in an effort to become the first amateur to win a Tour competition since Phil Mickelson in the 1991 Tucson Open.
Vick winning the competition he grew up going to, or even simply competing, would make for an epic tale. Vick obtained his first-ever autograph at this occasion. Vick received a golf ball from Stewart Cink when he was 5 years old as he was leaving the ninth green.
Vick ran into Cink this week while he was on the field, but he didn’t want to “bother him” by telling him the story. The near future, though, may bring about the appearance of another opportunity.
Despite being “on the edge” of his seat in anticipation of playing on the Tour full-time, Vick intends to finish his senior year at Texas. He intends to “slowly attempt to make my way out here” by securing a couple Korn Ferry Tour starts the following year.
Like any Tour player, he will have plenty of failures to go along with his successes when that time comes. But Vick needs the lessons learned from these two recent weeks in order to be successful.
