LPGA Tour: After round one of the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore, Elizabeth Szokol recorded an eight-under 64 to take a three-shot lead; Japan’s Yuka Saso is in second place.
Elizabeth Szokol opened up a three-stroke lead following the opening round of the HSBC Women’s World Championship at the Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore on Thursday with a score of eight under par.
The American, who began her round on the 10th hole, overcame an early bogey to finish with seven birdies and an eagle, giving her a commanding lead over the rest of the field, which was led by Japan’s Yuka Saso, who shot a perfect 67 to take the lead at five under.
Nelly Korda, the No. 2 player in the world, shot 68 to tie for third with Patty Tavatanakit, Hyo Joo Kim, Ariya Jutanugarn, and Jeongeun Lee6.
Top-ranked Despite having terrible days with the putter, Lydia Ko (70) of New Zealand and Jin Young Ko (72) of South Korea, the current champion, tied for 14th place and 36th place, respectively.
Szokol, the 153rd-ranked golfer in the world, said she took advantage of the slick conditions on the course while she was recovering from a ruptured disc.
“I’m just getting started playing here. Others also claimed that it is typically a little stiffer. Yet the rain unquestionably made it softer. I could thus be a little more assertive today with certain pins,” She spoke.
“I played well today and made six birdies,” she continued. “I played without a coach for three years following my US Open victory in 2019, and throughout that time I was having trouble with my uneven swing.”
Saso, who won the US Open in 2021 as a teenager but has since won nothing, stated: “Oh, it’s not simple to win on the LPGA here. As a result, all you can do is keep pushing forward, keep striving, and give yourself a chance.”
