PGA Championship 2023: Following his exclusion from the lineup for the second major of the year, 15-time major champion Tiger Woods has been declared formally ineligible for the PGA Championship.
Woods is noticeably absent from the entry list for next week’s competition at Oak Hill Country Club as he continues to recuperate from injury, according to the PGA of America.
Woods withdrew from The Masters in the middle of the round in order to undergo “successful” ankle surgery later that month, and it was widely anticipated that he would miss the competition, which he won four times.
In a statement released last month, the former world No. 1 claimed that he underwent a “subtalar fusion procedure to address his post-traumatic arthritis from his previous talus fracture,” despite the fact that Woods was still experiencing pain from the injuries he sustained in the career-ending automobile accident in February 2021.
The 47-year-old will now miss the PGA Championship for the third time in seven years, and there is still no word on when he will be able to play competitively again.
Injury worries for Spieth before Grand Slam attempt
The original field includes three-time major champion Jordan Spieth, who withdrew from this week’s AT&T Byron Nelson on the PGA Tour due to an injury.
The American only needs to win the PGA Championship to become the sixth golfer to complete the Grand Slam after winning The Masters, US Open, and The Open at Royal Birkdale in 2015.
The 29-year-old withdrew from this week’s tournament in Texas citing a wrist strain as the cause after missing the cut at the Wells Fargo Championship in his previous outing. Spieth acknowledged that the issue requires “week to week” monitoring.
Spieth expressed disappointment in a social media post, saying, “The AT&T Byron Nelson means the absolute world to me and I’m heartbroken to miss it this week. “One of the joys of my year is playing in front of family and friends in Dallas, and the tournament personnel and volunteers are exceptional.

The former world No. 1 continued, “I’m focused on healing as quickly as possible and will have to evaluate my recovery week to week.” Sincere appreciation to the medical staff who helped me during the weekend.
