PGA Memorial Tournament: Rory McIlroy harmed his chances on Thursday by shooting a triple-bogey seven at the final hole, which hampered the chances of English teammates Matt Wallace and Danny Willett to participate at the Memorial Tournament.
Davis Riley is in the lead after the first day of the competition in Dublin, Ohio, which was played in sweltering heat. Wallace, who has one PGA Tour victory, is one shot back. Wallace got off to a strong start in the tournament, finishing the day with 68 and four under after hitting only two bogeys.
A fellow countryman named Willett finished third, one stroke behind Wallace, in a tie with seven other players.
At Muirfield Village Golf Course, Willett, 35, finished with a score of three under par after making four birdies, an eagle, and three bogeys.
Along with Jordan Spieth and David Lipsky, Shane Lowry of Ireland concluded the day level with Willett after making five straight birdies.

With just one bogey and six birdies, leader Davis Riley managed the course conditions admirably and is vying for his second PGA Tour victory. Riley finished on five under par.
Rory’s nightmare just before…
Due to his triple bogey on the final hole, McIlroy had an even day’s performance. After making four birdies prior to the last hole, he tied for 33rd place.
He wasn’t the only well-known player, though, to experience difficulties. The number one player in the world, Scottie Scheffler, had his worst opening round since October 2021. He ended with a round of two over par and was seven strokes behind.
Another golfer, Billy Horschel, broke down in tears after shooting the best first round ever by a defending champion at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio.
Horschel stated his confidence had plummeted after his 12-over round of 84 at Muirfield Village Golf Course, which featured three double bogeys and six bogeys.
According to Horschel, “My confidence is the lowest it’s ever been in my entire career—I think ever in my entire golf career.”
