RBC Heritage: At 14 under, Matt Fitzpatrick leads Patrick Cantlay and defending winner Jordan Spieth going into the final round at Hilton Head. Fitzpatrick is one shot ahead of Cantlay at 13.
After shooting an incredible eight-under 63 on Saturday in the third round of the RBC Heritage, England’s Matt Fitzpatrick holds a one-shot lead going into the final round.
The 28-year-old, who won the US Open in 2022, added six birdies for his lowest-ever score on the PGA Tour after holing his second shot for an eagle two on the third hole.
Jordan Spieth, who lost to Patrick Cantlay in a playoff last year, is now one shot behind him at 12 under, while Cantlay is now one shot ahead of Spieth himself at 14 under par. Each of them scored 66, which is par.
Fitzpatrick has had a challenging year overall; he missed four cuts in seven separate events prior to last week’s tie for tenth place at the Masters, just his second top-10 finish.
After his round, Fitzpatrick stated, “I think this is a golf course that has proved that there are low scores around here this week.”
“That is, besides Augusta, my favourite golf course.”
Tommy Fleetwood of England shot a 68 to get to 11 under par, where he is tied with four other players, including world No. 2 Scottie Scheffler (69) and early leader Jimmy Walker (72).
Walker, a former US PGA champion, was tied for the lead with Fitzpatrick after the first two rounds of the competition before suffering three bogeys on the back nine that caused him to lose ground.
Jon Rahm, the reigning Masters champion, and Englishmen Justin Rose (72) and Aaron Rai are both eight under after their third rounds of 69. (71).
