RBC Heritage: After defeating Jordan Spieth in a nail-biting playoff to claim the RBC Heritage, Matt Fitzpatrick said that he “can retire now.”
With his victory at the 2022 US Open, Fitzpatrick’s second PGA Tour triumph propelled him eight spots to No. 8 in the world.
He is only the second Englishman to win the RBC Heritage, following Sir Nick Faldo in 1984, and Fitzpatrick has a unique connection to the tournament because he went as a boy.
He laughed, “I guess I can retire now. I’ve always wanted to win this one,” The truth is that there isn’t any golf tournament aside from the majors that is higher on my list than to win this one.
“It is something that both my friends and family can confirm. For me, this location is really precious, therefore winning it means the world.”
Fitzpatrick and the American engaged in a duel at Hilton Head as American yells could be heard from other parts of the course.
A 28-year-old man: “There is no denying that it tastes a little bit sweeter when you win when you’re the underdog or the person that no one is pulling for. Nonetheless, I thought I had a lot of outside support.”
Fitzpatrick: I’ve learned to be patient with myself.
Fitzpatrick has had a difficult start to the season, failing to make the cut in five of the 11 PGA Tour events. Yet the 10th-place showing at The Masters last week was a portent of things to come.
“I simply feel like I played pretty well this week. Coming in off the weekend last week, I felt good, and I just carried it into the remainder of the week.” Added Fitzpatrick.
“People will undoubtedly exclaim, “Ah, this golf course suits him well.” Nevertheless, as you can see from my findings, it isn’t always the case. Many times, I’ve come up short. I’ve occasionally been placed in the middle of the pack.”
Fitzpatrick is renowned for his compulsive devotion to analytics and meticulous analysis of each shot, but he has also improved his mental game.
Spieth took the lead by two strokes in the final round, but Fitzpatrick was able to close the gap with birdies at holes 15 and 16.
“When I play well, I feel like I’ve learned to have patience, to just let things happen, and to just give myself time,” he added.
“The final round consists of 18 holes in total. Everything can alter in the following three holes if you catch up after five holes.”
