LIV Golf Players: Matt Fitzpatrick is open to the notion of LIV Golf members appearing in the Ryder Cup but believes they should never be permitted to return to the PGA Tour.
The PGA Tour has suspended players who have joined the breakaway circuit since it began last June for an indefinite period of time. Major champions Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith were among those who made the switch.
With no existing mechanism in place should a player seek to return to the PGA Tour, Jay Monahan stated before of The Players that their position on LIV members had not changed. Fitzpatrick questioned if they should ever be welcomed back.
In the days leading up to The Players, Fitzpatrick told Sky Sports News, “My own belief is that you can’t have your cake and eat it, too. If someone had visited LIV, I would not permit them to return.”
“Do not misunderstand me; they might simply say, “You may come and play LIV if you choose,” but I do not wish to do that. I would like to remain here and participate in the DP World Tour and PGA Tour.
“I would be shocked if the PGA Tour did invite them back because I think it is really unfair of them to do so. Although I’m not sure what other players would say, I believe Tiger Woods would likely take the same position if you spoke to him.
“If you left the Tour that you were on for so long and performed so well on, then you left for something you think is better, even though it might not always be greener.”
LIV players at the Ryder Cup?
At the Ryder Cup in September in Rome, Team Europe’s lineup is likely to have undergone significant upheaval, with several of their former mainstays and members of the record-breaking defeat in 2021 now playing for LIV.
Thomas Pieters, the league’s highest scorer in 2016, is the newest member to join LIV ahead of the 2023 league season, while all LIV participants can collect Ryder Cup qualification points from competitions in which they are still eligible to participate.
When asked if players like Pieters joining LIV might make Team Europe weaker if they aren’t permitted to play, Fitzpatrick responded, “I would say so, definitely yeah.
“Clearly, what I just stated about not allowing them to return to the PGA Tour or DP World Tour is something I entirely agree with, but the Ryder Cup is a very different situation.
“I personally would prefer the team to have the top 12 players. To try and win-win, I hope to be one of those. In my perspective, the objective should be to attempt to win rather than to be kind about who should be playing.”
