Ryder Cup: If Ian Poulter is selected for the match in Rome in September, he has said he could think about forgoing the Ryder Cup.
Poulter has gained the moniker ‘Mr Ryder Cup’ for to his heroics for Europe against the United States, most notably by igniting the ‘Miracle at Medinah’ in 2012. However, joining LIV Golf has seriously jeopardised his participation in the upcoming competition.
While the DP World Tour this summer penalised players £100,000 and barred them from the Genesis Scottish Open, that decision was temporarily overturned on appeal. The PGA Tour has suspended members who competed on the Saudi-funded circuit.
The Ryder Cup eligibility of players like Poulter, Lee Westwood, and Sergio Garcia, among others, will be decided by the outcome of the whole case, which will be heard in early February.
“I would adore being eligible. It would be different whether I played or not, Poulter told reporters prior to the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. I have not abandoned anything. Who knows whether I succeed these next two weeks?
“I definitely don’t anticipate receiving one of the six captain’s choices. No way, shape, or form. That is also regrettable. What does that mean, exactly? What is the background to that?”
Luke Donald, the captain of Europe, said in September that it was difficult to respond to “hypotheticals” on whether he would grant LIV players a wild card, although it would seem extremely unlikely given the hostility involved.
While Jon Rahm and Matt Fitzpatrick believe the Ryder Cup should only consist of the best players from Europe and the United States, Rory McIlroy has made it clear he does not believe LIV players should be on the team and has detailed the breakdown of his previously close relationship with Garcia in particular.
Last week, Poulter came under fire for complaining on social media over Ryder Cup Europe’s failure to tweet Garcia’s birthday wishes, acknowledging that he was “fighting petty with petty” in that instance.
‘I’ve said a lot of stupid things throughout the years.’
“Do I need to have said it? No, and yes. I merely brought attention to reality. Other explanations were lacking,” Poulter continued.
“Look, 2022 was rife with significant diversion. And my whole emphasis for 2023 is on playing solid golf, having fun, and avoiding distractions to the greatest extent feasible. Given everything that is known to the public, 2022 was challenging.
“It has been simple for me to let things go out of control inside, as annoying as that is for me when I feel like some of it is very unjust. since not all in the story has been said.”
Additionally, Henrik Stenson is competing in Abu Dhabi. The former Open champion, who joined LIV Golf after losing his position as Ryder Cup captain, is making his maiden appearance on the DP World Tour.
