Jon Rahm thinks that winning the Sentry Tournament of Champions would ignite a fantastic 2023 campaign that includes more major championships.
Rahm won his fourth PGA Tour championship earlier this month in Hawaii after overcoming a seven-shot deficit with a big helping hand from longtime leader Collin Morikawa.
In contrast to Morikawa, who struggled to a final-round 72, the world No. 4 shot a fantastic final round of 63 and is already looking to win additional medals before The American Express in La Quinta, California.
Winning is obviously tremendously satisfying, but Rahm noted it was good to accomplish it so early in the year. “I had told my partner for that week that I loved her, and that was the one thing I could not stop thinking about.
“Therefore, I was able to say to [his wife] Kelley and the people that assist us with travel, “Well, book the rooms for next year because we’re definitely coming back.”
“Getting a decent number of FedEx Cup points early in the year is always fantastic, but if I start 2023 with a victory, let’s just say it optimises my chances of getting as many victories as possible. The start is excellent.
Several athletes, Cam Smith being the most recent, ‘I’ve seen win that competition before going on a winning streak for a full year.’
“So I’m hoping it’s one of those years that can go off to a good start. Pick up a few wins, and ideally a major.”
Rahm won The American Express, formerly known as the CareerBuilder Challenge, in 2018, but he also made headlines a year earlier for criticising the Nicklaus Tournament Course, one of three used for the competition, for its soft conditions.
Rahm can be seen cursing while leaving one of the greens in a video shared on social media. The former US Open champion did, however, express his opinions after returning to the scene. Despite not being explicitly questioned about the remarks.
Rahm stated, “I’m thinking that my remarks from last year might come back to bite me. However, it was more of an outburst on the golf course.”
“It has a lot of history, and in my opinion, it is a tremendous event. Despite what I said on the golf course last year, I’ve always loved it here. That was just a golfer venting frustration.”
