Solheim Cup: After being named captain of Team Europe for the 2024 competition in Virginia, USA, Suzann Pettersen will guide her team into back-to-back Solheim Cups.
Nine times a representative of Europe, Pettersen concluded her illustrious playing career in the 2019 competition by securing the decisive point in a thrilling triumph.
The Norwegian held the position of vice-captain twice, most recently working with Catriona Matthew’s coaching staff in 2021 when they won a historic match on American territory. Pettersen is already confirmed to lead Europe in this September’s match at Finca Cortesin in Andalucía, Spain.
A year later, on September 13–15, 2024, at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, Pettersen will serve as the event’s captain once more as Europe looks to win a second straight match on American territory.
I adore the Solheim Cup, so being chosen to lead Team Europe once more in 2024 is such a special honour,” said Pettersen.
“Normally, we play the competition every two years and announce the next captain after the competition. However, due to schedule changes and having back-to-back Solheim Cups in consecutive years, it makes perfect sense to be offered the position a second time before the 2023 matches have even been played.
“It will be an honour to be able to captain the team in Europe this year and then again in the States, close to the capital, as my 2023 captaincy has so far been an absolute joy. This will help us to develop a team philosophy and approach that we can stick to, giving the players more predictability and allowing them to concentrate on their performances. My main goal is to create a cohesive squad around the players and a positive environment before moving things forward.”
The CEO of the Ladies European Tour, Alexandra Armas, called the 21-time champion a “natural option” to be the team’s captain.
In her career, Pettersen finished in the top 10 in 23 major championships, reaching a peak of No. 2 in the women’s world rankings.
She is working really hard to get ready for the 2023 Solheim Cup in Spain, and Armas continued, “Her experience, enthusiasm, and pride will make her a fantastic leader in 2024. This continuity in leadership will guarantee that the players have the best preparation as we work towards another extremely successful event in 2024,” says Suzann, who is well-known and respected by the players.
