Valspar Tournament: With a thrilling Valspar Tournament finish, American Taylor Moore won his first PGA Tour championship in his 46th outing.
Moore shot a final-round 67 at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort to reach the clubhouse goal of 10 under par. He then had to wait in suspense to see if any of his competitors could duplicate it.
Adam Schenk, the overnight leader, needed to par the 18th hole in order to avoid a play-off, but he dragged his shot left of the fairway, where it landed inches from the foot of a tree.
His left-handed shot from there made excellent contact and flew through the fairway, but after nailing his approach shot to 41 feet, his long par attempt carried too much speed and missed by five feet.
Jordan Spieth, who was playing alongside Schenk, needed to make a birdie on the last hole to pass Moore, but he three-putted from a distance, dropping him back into a tie for third with Tommy Fleetwood of England on eight under.
After hitting a horrible drive into the water on the 16th hole, Spieth, who had been tied for the lead, managed to rescue a stunning bogey. On the par-3 17th, he then produced his best tee shot of the day but missed a birdie opportunity from six feet.
It hasn’t really hit me yet,” Moore told NBC. I was just in a competition mindset while watching the guys finish, possibly in a playoff or not.
“It’s amazing, it’s what I work for, and I’m really excited for everyone around me as well as for myself. It’s a great time.”
After making his third birdie of the day on the par-five 11th, Fleetwood moved into a tie for the lead as well. However, he needed two attempts to get out of a difficult lie in a greenside bunker on the 14th, and the resulting bogey effectively ended his chances of winning his first PGA Tour championship.
Sam Burns, the two-time defending champion who was attempting to become the first golfer in more than ten years to win the same PGA Tour tournament three years in a row, came in sixth place after shooting a final-round 67.
The most recent player to accomplish the feat was former Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker, who did it at the John Deere Classic between 2009 and 2011.
Since then, 13 players have had a chance to match Stricker, but none have done so. In his attempt to win the US Open for a third consecutive year, Brooks Koepka came the closest in 2019 at Pebble Beach, where he placed second.
