Dustin Johnson’s lucrative LIV season came to an end with another seven-figure payout on Sunday as his 4Aces GC won the Saudi-sponsored LIV Golf team tournament.
4Aces GC won the tournament at Trump National Doral by one shot over Cameron Smith and Punch GC after Johnson drove to the green on the 370-yard par-4 16th hole to set up an easy birdie that gave their team some breathing room. Patrick Reed also made a birdie on his final hole to put their team permanently in the lead.
On the par-72 course, Johnson (70), Reed (70), Talor Gooch (71) and Pat Perez (70) together shot 7-under 281 and received a $16 million prize.
Perez stated, “I feel unbelievable. Reed, who was feeling even better, birdied the last hole to give Johnson a one-shot advantage to work with.
When Reed completed, Johnson was on the par-4 18th green in two, while Smith, the other golfer in Johnson’s twosome, required a miracle that didn’t materialise. After Johnson made two putts, the game was finished after Reed’s birdie put his team in the lead.
Johnson, who was by far the greatest winner in the inaugural year of LIV, rounded off a record-breaking earnings year with the victory. Johnson earned a total of $35,637,767 after adding his $18 million prize for taking the individual championship for the entire season.
Without taking into account signing bonuses, which were significant and were said to be around $200 million for Phil Mickelson and at least $100 million each for players like Johnson, Koepka, and Bryson DeChambeau, that amounts to 14% of the $255 million in purses and bonuses that all players won in LIV’s inaugural year.
Wade Ormsby (73), Marc Leishman (74), Matt Jones (70), and Smith (65), who all finished at 6-under, shared $8 million. Peter Uihlein (75), Jason Kokrak (68), Brooks Koepka (74), and Chase Koepka (75) of Smash GC finished 4-over and divided $6 million.
Louis Oosthuizen (71), Charl Schwartzel (71), Hennie du Plessis (76), and Branden Grace (80) played for Stinger GC, which ended at 10-over par and shared $4 million.
When LIV expands from eight to 14 tournaments the following year, the rewards will total $405 million. Additionally, there will be extra signing bonuses if more athletes join LIV in the upcoming months.
During the LIV Golf broadcast on YouTube, Mickelson said, “Next year we’re going to play 14 events, plus…the majors.” He then performed the knock-on-wood-for-luck gesture.
“There’s a lot of golf there. Next year, I’ll be playing a lot of golf, and I truly want to return to my previous playing standard.”
