The 151st Open: Cameron Smith will defend his title at The 151st Open at Royal Liverpool, the Champion Golfer of the Year will collect the largest prize money in the tournament’s history.
The winner of the 151st Open Championship will receive a record $3 million (£2.3 million) in prize money, according to the R&A.
The first award is $500,000 (£387k) more than Cameron Smith won when he was named Champion Golfer of the Year in St Andrews in July, while the runner-up this year in Hoylake will earn $1.7 million (£1.31 million).
According to the R&A, the overall prize fund for the 151st edition of the event will be $16.5 million, up from $14 million in 2022.
No. 3 The favourites to win the Claret Jug in 2023 are Rory McIlroy, No. 2 Jon Rahm, and No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
The R&A also revealed that the overall prize budget for the 2023 competition at Royal Liverpool had grown by 18% to $16.5 million.
“Our goal is to keep The Open at the pinnacle of world golf,” said R&A CEO Martin Slumbers, and we have nearly doubled the prize fund since 2016.
“While the prize money in the men’s professional game is increasing significantly, we are fulfilling our larger obligation to the sport by elevating the AIG Women’s Open, strengthening pathways in the elite amateur game, and encouraging more people around the world to play golf.”
“We believe that striking this balance is critical for the sport’s long-term future.”
For the 2023 Masters, the prize money was $18 million, with victor Jon Rahm receiving $3.24 million and Brooks Koepka receiving $3.15 million from a total $17.5 million fund when he won the PGA Championship at Oak Hill in May.
The US Open boasts the largest prize fund of the four men’s majors, with Wyndham Clark taking home $3.6 million of the $20 million on offer last month in Los Angeles, with $20 million being the same purse the PGA Tour has been paying for upgraded tournaments in the 2022-23 season.
