The Players Championship: In 2023, Tiger Woods won’t participate in the Players Championship; After quitting the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf, Cameron Smith is ineligible to return to defend his championship; Star-studded event includes Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffle, and Jon Rahm.
Tiger Woods missed the deadline to enter the 2023 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.
In his first official appearance since the Open in July of last year and his first in a non-major PGA Tour event since the Zozo Championship in October 2020, Woods placed tied-45th at the Genesis Invitational.
During his debut at Riviera Golf Club, the 15-time major champion announced that he would “probably only play the majors and maybe a couple more.” Woods has mobility limitations as a result of career-threatening knee and ankle injuries he sustained in February 2021.
It is now official that Woods will not compete at the PGA Tour’s marquee tournament at TPC Sawgrass from March 9–12. Woods had until 5 p.m. local time on Friday (10 p.m. GMT) to confirm his place.
As he received a five-year exemption for winning The Masters in 2019, the current world No. 984 is still eligible, but Woods has chosen not to tee it up in a field that also includes Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, and Scottie Scheffler.
Tiger’s Sawgrass record
Since his 1997 tournament debut and his most recent start in 2019, the 47-year-old has missed the event just twice, and next week’s absence will be his third.
At TPC Sawgrass, Woods has won twice. His first victory came in the 2001 competition after holing a 60-foot putt on the renowned par-three 17th hole, which is known for its famous “better than most” remarks and exuberant celebrations.
His other victory in this year’s competition, in which he finished two shots ahead of the field to win one of five PGA Tour victories in 2013, occurred ten years ago.
The Masters, which will take place from April 6 to 9, is set to be Woods’ next appearance. There, the five-time Green Jacket champion will look to improve on his 47th-place showing at Augusta National last year.
