South Africa Open: Thriston Lawrence, the home favourite, outlasted Frenchman Clement Sordet’s valiant effort to win the DP World Tour’s South African Open in Johannesburg by one stroke.
After dropping five strokes in as many holes on his back nine during the final round, Lawrence stumbled to a two-over-par 74. It didn’t help that he made a double bogey on the 15th after the South Africans had been cruising to the victory.
Going into the final two holes, they were neck and neck, but Lawrence kept his composure to prevail with a score of 16-under par when Sordet missed a short par putt on the 17th.
Lawrence had already won the Omega European Masters in August, making this victory his third tour title triumph overall.
A relieved Lawrence stated, “This is what you work for, as a youngster you dream for this moment, to win such a famous event in front of an awesome crowd.
“Going through the round felt effortless, and then the final event was the game of golf. Clement was playing excellently, and I was also playing well until I committed a few errors, missed them on the incorrect sides, and was unable to score as a result.
“The error was mine because I still needed to make the golf shot (on the 15th), even if my caddie and I misread the wind. Considering how aggressive I’ve been all week, I made a mistake by taking a timid approach.
“It’s just golf, but it was unfortunate for Clement to miss the short putt on hole 17. I’m very happy with how well I was able to do it.”
Jens Fahrbring of Sweden and Matti Schmid of Germany both finished one stroke behind Sordet after making bogey on two of the final three holes, respectively.
