US Open: Stewart Cink’s run of birdies gets him a berth at this month’s major in Los Angeles, but Michael Block and 13-year-old Jaden Soong lose out on slots in final qualifying.
As the last round of qualifying for this month’s major in Los Angeles came to an end, players like Michael Block, his son Dylan, and 13-year-old phenom Jaden Soong were among those who did not advance to the US Open.
Block, a club professional from California, gained attention during the PGA Championship in May when he tied for 15th place and shot a hole-in-one during the final round while paired with Rory McIlroy.
The 46-year-old will not, however, be competing in consecutive majors since, with a 36-hole total of five under par, he placed sixth and was two shots outside of the three qualifying spots at the Toronto venue.
At the Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles, Dylan Block made an effort to qualify for the US Open. He finished far behind the other 89 players.
But Andy Zhang will continue to maintain the record for being the US Open’s youngest participant. He was just 14 years old when he competed in San Francisco in 2012. To surpass Zhang’s previous record, American teenager Soong set out.
Soong shot seven over at Hillcrest and finished in 58th position.
The US Open will be held at the Los Angeles County Club starting on Thursday, June 15, with coverage for all four days.
One of the contestants is 50-year-old Ohioan Stewart Cink, who qualified by carding five birdies over the course of six holes at Brookside Golf & Country Club.
Matt Jones and Cameron Tringale failed to make any progress, although LIV Golf’s current employees Sebastian Munoz, Carlos Ortiz, and David Puig all did.
