Valspar Championship: Adam Schenk posted a two-under 69 to hold a one-shot lead after the first two rounds at the Valspar Championship on Friday.
On the Copperhead course at Innisbrook, Schenk closed with a bogey from the bunker just short of the 18th after making four birdies, all but one of them from within 10 feet.
That didn’t concern him after making the 20-foot putt for par on the par-3 eighth, the 10-footer for par on the tenth, and the lengthy up-and-down for par on the par-five eleventh.
“I believe that many times you might shoot two under and think, “It might have been six or seven.” But given how many putts I made, it really couldn’t have been much better,” he said.
He recorded a score of 7-under 135 and was one better than Kramer Hickok, who had a 68.
For the tenth week in a row, Schenk is competing on the PGA Tour.
His wife is due with their first kid, a boy, in less than a month, so his job this year is even more focused.
“The time I spend with him and my wife will be very special, therefore I’m trying to make as many arguments as I can to take as much time off as I can,” Schenk said.
Since the Sony Open in Honolulu, where he began the year, he hasn’t taken a single week off while travelling to California, Arizona, and every stop on the Florida swing. In all but two of them, he had made the cut, and he is ranked No. 72 in the FedEx Cup.
The Players Championship cut that wasn’t made last week would have been helpful.
I didn’t pick up a club over my three and a half days at home, Schenk admitted. “I would have practised, but Indiana’s terrible weather made it impossible for me to do so. We arrived at Valspar on a Tuesday afternoon by plane, played nine holes as a practise round, and then teed off in the pro-am before leaving.”
Jordan Spieth will play a significant role this weekend after blowing a solid driving round with some dubious short shots. Even with his 70, he was only two shots behind.
After a 69, Tommy Fleetwood, Cody Gribble, and Davis Riley, who last year lost to Sam Burns in a playoff at Innisbrook, joined Spieth in the group two strokes back.
