LPGA: As the only two players in LPGA history to do it, Atthaya Thitikul and Lydia Ko have both climbed to No. 1 in the world before turning 20.
Ko first cracked the top spot at the age of 17. Thitikul, who is 19 years old, is still in her first LPGA season. Sung Hyun Park was the only other player to debut at No. 1 in 2017.
Thitikul overtook Jin Young Ko to take the top spot. With 152 weeks overall at No. 1, Ko is just six weeks away from breaking Lorena Ochoa’s record.
“It has great significance for my team, my family, my supporters, and me, stated Thitikul. “It is such a privilege to be listed first among the largest brands in the industry. Getting to the top requires a lot of talent, but maintaining it is considerably more difficult. On and off the course, I still have a lot to learn from the greats and contemporary competitors. For my family, my team, my supporters, and my nation, I will keep putting in a lot of effort.”
Thitikul, who has won twice on the LPGA Tour this year, joins Ariya Jutanugarn as the second player from Thailand to hold the top rank in the Rolex Rankings. Ariya Jutanugarn first achieved this accomplishment in June 2017.
Along with the two victories, Thitikul has achieved 12 more top-10 finishes this season, three of which came at important competitions.
Prior to joining the LPGA, Thitikul won the Ladies European Tour’s Race to Costa del Sol in 2021 at the age of just 24, earning player and rookie of the year awards. Thitikul’s victory at 2017 LET Thailand Championship made her the youngest golfer ever to win a professional tournament at the age of 14.
