Wyndham Clark won the Wells Fargo Championship by a commanding four shots after overcoming a battle with Xander Schauffele in the final round to win his first PGA Tour title.
In the first three holes, Clark’s two-shot overnight lead vanished, and with 11 holes remaining, he was still two shots behind Schauffele. However, Clark went on to seize the tournament with five birdies in an eight-hole stretch around the turn.
The world No. 80 shot a three-under 68 to finish the week on 19 under par and easily defeat his playing companion. Schauffele had to settle for second after shooting a final-round 70.
“It’s taken me five years to get here, I’m a little choked up,” Clark remarked. “I had hoped to win sooner, but the wait was definitely worth it. I got off to a rough start and I believe that in previous years, I might have given up. This time, I was persistent and patient, and my behind caught fire.”
How Clark made his PGA Tour Debut
After a bad drive and poor shot from the rough at the first hole, which resulted in a bogey, Schauffele’s lead was soon cut to one. Schauffele then rolled in a 10-foot birdie at the third hole to tie his playing partner.
When Schauffele missed from eight feet at the eighth, Clark was able to tie the hole with a close-range birdie. Schauffele had previously converted from six feet to save par at the sixth and produced a superb two-putt at the next to edge ahead.
Due to Schauffele’s three-putt bogey at the ninth hole, Clark missed a spectacular birdie opportunity from six feet out, but he still found himself one up at the halfway point. Clark subsequently increased his lead by taking advantage of the par-five tenth hole.
When Schauffele couldn’t get out of a greenside bunker on the 11th hole, he slipped farther behind. However, he managed to scramble par on the next hole, where Clark took advantage of a fortunate bounce to sink a 20-foot birdie and go four up.
