Ascot Champions Day: Perfect Power, a stable standout, is reportedly still on track to win the Qipco British Champions Sprint at Ascot on Saturday week despite the ongoing search for Christophe Soumillon’s replacement.
The Ardad colt added to his earlier top-level victories as a two-year-old in the Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes by winning the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot in June.
But after being the favourite for the July Cup at Newmarket and the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville in early August, he has since underwhelmed.
Fahey is hopeful that after giving his driver a little mid-season rest, he will display his true colours on Champions Day.
The Musley Bank trainer declared, “He’s in terrific form, and we’re really satisfied with him. “He received some rest from us, and since then, he has been working out diligently. He’s in terrific shape, we’ve taken him away a few times, and we’re looking forward to it.
“He adores Ascot. I had considered travelling to France, but after chatting with Dalmook Al Maktoum’s owner, Sheikh Rashid, we decided to accompany him directly to Ascot.
“He simply wants the ground to be less stable. He’s run on the really hard ground a lot, and he just didn’t do well on it. It would be lovely to have some level ground.”
The search is on for a replacement jockey as Soumillon is out due to a 60-day suspension for elbowing Rossa Ryan off his horse, which takes effect the day before Ascot.
There have been negotiations, and Bruce Raymond, the owner’s racing manager, is currently involved.
