Jockey Club: To make horseracing more “accessible and inclusive,” The Jockey Club has announced that it will abolish formal dress requirements at all of its tracks.
Fans are now being instructed to “dress how you feel most comfortable and confident” at the club’s 15 locations under the new regulation.
The modification is effective immediately and comes in response to input from racegoers and an examination of dress standards.
Aintree, Carlisle, Haydock Park, Epsom Downs, Kempton Park, Sandown Park, Huntingdon, Market Rasen, Newmarket, Nottingham, Cheltenham, Exeter, Warwick, The Jockey Club Rooms, and Wincanton are among the racetracks that fall under The Jockey Club’s purview.
Nevin Truesdale, chief executive of The Jockey Club, provided an explanation for the choice, saying: “Horseracing has always been a sport that is appreciated by people from all various backgrounds, and it’s vitally essential to us to be accessible and inclusive.
“We wish to highlight the fact that racing is truly for everyone by no longer imposing expectations on people on what they should and shouldn’t wear.
“A day at the races is all about spending quality time with friends and family for those who attend our sites, and we think people enjoy themselves most when they are calm. Wearing comfy clothing is a crucial component of that.
“While The Jockey Club has a long history and a rich past, it is also a forward-thinking organisation that values inclusiveness and diversity and constantly aims to reflect contemporary trends.

“Therefore, it became evident to us when we examined this aspect of race day that many of our participants felt that enforcing a clothing code was quite archaic in the 21st century.
“Naturally, this does not imply that we are discouraging individuals from dressing up for a day at the races if they choose to do so. Giving people the option and freedom to race in whatever attire makes them feel most confident and comfortable while also taking into account the problems that the British weather frequently presents!”
Truesdale said that even though The Jockey Club will implement this change in 2023, a sizable number of events have already taken place without dress codes.
