Racing News: The Educator will line up at Salisbury on Thursday, and the King will have his first runner in the renowned royal silks.
Although His Majesty has had runners in the colours he shared with the Queen Consort when they were the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, respectively, it will be the first time the renowned purple, red, and gold silks will race the track in his honour.
The late Queen once held out hope that the William Haggas-trained Educator would win the Classic, but the three-year-old hasn’t raced since narrowly winning a minor race at Newmarket in April.
At Newmarket’s Open Weekend earlier this month, Educator was one of two horses who rode up Warren Hill wearing the royal regalia as a tribute to the monarch. He will now wear the uniform while competing in the Radcliffe & Co Handicap.
Since Improvise was defeated by a short head at Epsom on September 8, the day the Queen passed away at her Balmoral residence in Scotland, he will be the first horse to compete in the colours.
Tom Marquand will be driving the son of Deep Impact, and he acknowledged that he will be experiencing a range of emotions as he helps King Charles III run a historic race.
In his words to Sky Sports Racing: “They will always be some of the fondest moments in my career because I rode for the Queen. Taking the first runner (for the King) is also an experience to treasure.
“He was unquestionably a noteworthy runner, so today will be both happy and sad.”
The Queen was a renowned owner, breeder, and one of the sport’s most well-known supporters, and Joe Saumarez Smith, chair of the British Horseracing Authority, expressed his satisfaction that the King has taken up the royal racing interests.
