The first active male UFC fighter that identifies as LGBTQ+ is Jeff Molina.
The UFC flyweight admitted it “was not the way I wanted to handle this,” but felt compelled to speak up when a private film was made public.
“I’ve made an effort to keep my love life off of social media, he stated. Yet I was denied the opportunity to do it when I was ready.”
“I’m bi,” he wrote in the message he shared on social media on Friday.
Molina continued: “I couldn’t imagine being treated differently for something I can’t control by my friends, teammates, and individuals I look up to.
“At this stage in my career, I had not planned to do this. For the past 11 years, I have worked hard and hoped to be recognised for my skills.
“At the end of the day, I am conscious of my ethics, integrity, and self. I also get assistance in accordance with the level of hostility hurled at me.
The 25-year-old UFC fighter Molina has won three of his first four fights.
In response to the “spiteful” reception he had after donning the UFC’s Pride Month shorts during his final bout, he said: “I just hoped people would be a bit more open-minded in 2022.”
Nevertheless, Molina won’t be competing in the UFC anytime soon as he is one of the athletes who has been suspended pending the outcome of an inquiry into a betting controversy.
