MMA News: As he revealed the severity of the ankle injury he incurred during his victory over Jared Gordon at UFC 282 in December, Paddy Pimblett said, “I’ll be lucky to fight this year.”
Pimblett defeated Gordon by unanimous decision in Las Vegas late last year to earn his 20th triumph in 23 professional fights, but he admitted to Sky Sports that it might be some time before he returns to competition.
Pimblett stated, “I had to get surgery after my last fight. It was the day a mural of me and another MMA star Molly McCann was unveiled in Liverpool. I kicked out and injured my foot in the first minute or two of the round. I could feel it, but I persisted and won the battle.
“At the conclusion of the fight, I can recall returning to the medical area and complaining that my foot was hurting. I had to wait till I came back home to have it properly examined. Much worse than they anticipated, in fact.
“I needed restoration of my inner and outer ligaments. It is hence substantial. It could be another six weeks after I’ve already spent six and a half weeks using crutches. I’ll be fortunate to compete this year.”
Pimblett has challenged Gordon to a rematch, but the American seems uninterested in doing so, claiming that doing so would be “fighting backwards” against the Liverpudlian.
“I am obviously living rent-free in [Pimblett’s] head,” declared Gordon, who will meet Bobby Green on Saturday. He is speaking in his recovery room, and his first few words are about Jared Gordon.
“I would fight Pimblett if it was worthwhile for me, but after Bobby, I start fighting backwards.
“So unless they offered me a highly prominent position and made me the centre of attention, which would help build my brand and develop me as a fighter,
“At that point, fighting-wise, it’s more or a danger for me. I might consider it if they gave me money or something else worthwhile.”
