Wimbledon: The legendary doubles player Bob Bryan, who underwent hip surgery concurrently with Andy Murray, has predicted that the Scot will “have a tremendous” Wimbledon this year.
Four years ago, while Murray was debating whether to undertake the resurfacing procedure, American Bryan, who had undergone the same procedure the year before, served as his main point of comparison.
Bryan was able to play for an additional year and a half until finally calling it quits in 2020 at the age of 42.
“It was basically the only option,” Bryan stated of the procedure. “Additionally, I believe it was a final resort. I believe Andy’s situation was similar. At this point, what do you have to lose? You’ve pretty much been eliminated.
“It simply provided me with fresh objectives and something to strive towards. For Andy, it’s a very different circumstance since he’s doing it on the singles court. But I assured him that this would be suitable for doubles.
“I’m not sure about singles; you’ll have to pave the way there. Amazingly, he is blazing it.”
Bryan downplayed his role in Murray’s operation, saying: “More so than I do, he is an expert. Before entering, I didn’t watch any YouTube videos. Just clip it and let’s go on, I said.
“He was familiar with every detail of the surgery and had spoken to every athlete who had undergone it before.”
Four years after the surgery, Murray is eyeing a solid season because of the forensic approach he has used throughout his entire career.
Bryan, who is competing in the Australian Open Legends competition, was one of those who witnessed the drama of Murray’s remarkable week at Melbourne Park. The 35-year-old spent 10 and a half hours on the court to defeat Thanasi Kokkinakis and Matteo Berrettini before narrowly losing to Roberto Bautista Agut.
“In my opinion, it’s pretty much the story of the week,” said Bryan. “As he stated on his Instagram, he was informed that he would never play professional tennis again four or five years ago.
“He is currently participating in the physically demanding bouts of the week while recovering incredibly well.
“I asked [Murray’s coach] Ivan Lendl how his hip was doing. ‘No difficulty at all,’ he says. And that’s how I feel about my surgically repaired hip: absolutely no issues.
“The biggest challenge is finding balance since you have one new hip and one old hip, as well as how your body adjusts to it and how it affects your lower back. I believe that was an adjustment for him initially, but he has it down.”
