Wimbledon Championship: Remember when Andy Murray won the men’s singles title at Wimbledon after a 77-year wait? It’s been ten years since he overcame old opponent Novak Djokovic on that magical Sunday.
The previous year concluded with Murray sobbing on Centre Court after losing to Roger Federer in his maiden final.
But, just a year later, and with his long-awaited maiden Grand Slam trophy under his belt in New York, the Scot faced another of his biggest tormentors, this time with history at his hands.
Murray won his third Queen’s Club championship a week before Wimbledon by defeating Marin Cilic, ending Britain’s 77-year wait for a men’s singles winner.
Murray overcame Djokovic in straight sets, 6-4 7-5 6-4, but even when he served for the match in a painful game that somehow embodied all of his troubles, it still felt on the verge of collapse.
In a match defined by long baseline rallies, the Scot let three championship points slip away in a nail-biting final game.
Djokovic smashed a poor backhand return into the net on the fourth attempt, and the celebrations – mixed with relief – could finally begin.
As a wave of delight swept through the land, the Scot burst into tears of ecstasy as he grabbed the championship that had evaded him for so long.
“I was exhausted after the game. I was sitting with my wife around 20 or 30 minutes after we left the court, trying to sleep. That is not how you generally feel after a match; ordinarily, the adrenaline makes it difficult to sleep, but I was absolutely exhausted after the game.”
Murray confesses to being “unbelievably nervous before the final” and believes his squad is “really nervous” as well.
“They were struggling to hide it,” the Scot stated. “During the pre-match warm-up, my physical trainer was fumbling all of the balls during the reaction drills.”
Even ‘Old Stone Face’ Ivan Lendl, the coach who had helped Murray become a Grand Slam winner, was feeling the pressure.
