Great Britain earned bronze medals in basketball and badminton at the Tokyo Paralympics, capping off a medal-laden campaign.
For the second consecutive Games, Great Britain finished second in the overall rankings, with a total of 124 podium places: 41 gold, 38 silver, and 45 bronze. With 207 medals, China came out on top.
Britain’s total was higher than London 2012 (120), although it fell short of Rio de Janeiro five years ago (147). The medal aim for UK Sport was between 100 and 140.
In Japan, the men’s wheelchair basketball team won their country’s penultimate medal by defeating Spain 68-58 in the third-place play-off, with Gaz Choudhry leading the way with 19 points.
“We’ve had so many rejections this summer. This was a heart-to-heart game “Choudhry explained.
“This bronze medal is for the rest of the team. We know where we were before, but now that we’ve won, it seems like more than a bronze. However, this team is deserving of a gold medal.”
After placing third, Krysten Coombs had the final word with the shuttlecock as he celebrated his spectacular piece of metal.
In the SH6 bronze medal match, Coombs came back from a game down to win Brazil’s Vitor Goncalves Tavares 12-21 21-10 21-16, avenging his semi-final loss to second seed Krishna Nagar.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It’s incredible to be able to leave these incredible Games with a bronze medal “Coombs stated.
“As you can see, it’s a fantastic sport that offers a plethora of chances. I’d like to think that by sharing my storey, I can inspire other children with dwarfism at home to realise that there is a path to success.”
The closing ceremony for this spectacular Games in Japan will be held on Sunday, with Boccia champion David Smith chosen as ParalympicsGB’s flagbearer.
David Weir, a six-time Paralympic gold medalist, finished fifth in the men’s T54 marathon with a season-best time of one hour, 29 minutes, and 45 seconds earlier.
