Tokyo Paralympics: Diede De Groot and Aniek Van Koot of Holland defeat Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley in the women’s doubles final; Gordon Reid defeats doubles partner Alfie Hewett to win the all-British bronze medal singles match.
Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley of Great Britain won Paralympic silver in wheelchair tennis, while Gordon Reid of Great Britain won bronze in men’s singles.
After being outclassed by Holland’s Diede De Groot and Aniek Van Koot in the women’s doubles final at Ariake Tennis Park, Shuker and Whiley were defeated in straight sets in just over an hour, losing 6-0 6-1.
Despite their thrashing on Saturday, the GB duo’s second spot on the podium was an improvement above their bronze medals from London 2012 and Rio 2016.
In the gold medal match in Brazil five years ago, Van Koot and De Groot were on opposite sides of the net, with the former winning with Jiske Griffioen and the latter with Marjolein Buis.
This time, they united to deadly effect, as second seeds Shuker and Whiley were unable to create traction in a match that quickly devolved into a formality.
De Groot had already won the singles title in Japan after defeating home favourite Yui Kamiji on Friday, while Van Koot was seeking vengeance after losing out on individual bronze to Whiley.
Later that day, Reid defeated doubles partner Alfie Hewett in the all-British bronze medal singles match.
On Friday, the couple were crushed after losing their second consecutive doubles final against French pair Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer.
Reid had beaten Hewett in the singles final at the Rio Olympics five years ago, and history was repeated – albeit with less on the line – as the Scotsman won a tight match 6-4 3-6 7-5 in two hours and 22 minutes to earn another trip to the podium.
