Olympic News: Beth Shriever becomes the first woman to win both the Olympic and World BMX Supercross titles.
On Sunday, Beth Shriever won the women’s BMX Supercross World Championships in Holland, adding to her Olympic gold medal.
After American Alise Willoughby was knocked out of the race by a three-rider incident, the 22-year-old gold medalist backed up her Tokyo victory.
Shriever, a former teaching assistant, became the first woman to win both the Olympic and global BMX Supercross titles at the same time as a result of this.
Judy Baauw of Holland and Laura Smulders of the Netherlands placed in second and third, respectively.
Her victory over the Dutch duo was all the sweeter because the competition was placed in Arnhem.
Shriever couldn’t believe what she’d just experienced after claiming her second huge victory in as many weeks.
“I just went on the outside, just to see what happens,” she said in a video interview posted by UCI BMX Supercross. “I had an all right start and just dug in.”
“I gave it my all and came away with another gold medal, so I couldn’t be more pleased.”
She tweeted on Instagram shortly after her victory: “Is this a dream? What a way to end the season as World Champion! Thank you to everyone that believed in me and #doubledup.”
