Tennis News: Caroline Garcia has spoken candidly about her struggle with bulimia, which was brought on by setbacks and discomfort from a foot injury.
The 29-year-old spoke up about a challenging era in her career following fluctuating form and injuries in an interview with the French publication L’Equipe.
In order to treat her foot ailment, she took a sabbatical from tennis in March 2022. The break paid off, as the Frenchwoman went on to win championships at the WTA Finals, Cincinnati, Bad Homburg, and Warsaw, in addition to making it to the US Open semifinals in the second half of the season.
Garcia admitted that there had been “many tears” and “many sleepless nights” before her recent run of success that saw her go back up to world number four in the rankings.
Garcia, who rose to the fourth position in September 2018, claimed she turned to food as a haven to soothe the discomfort brought on by the pain of the injury and loss of form.
“You need to refuel because you feel so depleted and depressed. It was the disappointment of not being able to play the way I wanted to, not succeeding, and experiencing bodily pain,” She spoke.
“I found some temporary comfort when eating. Even though we all know it won’t last, it was a getaway. It’s out of your hands.”
Garcia claimed that while communicating with friends and family helped her better her relationship with food, being alone in hotel rooms while on the tour added to the difficulties.
“It occurs less now that I’m taking more time for myself and appreciating everything surrounding tennis a little more. When it does, I accept it more readily and feel far less bad about it,” she continued.
“I don’t get the longing for something too often when I give myself little pleasures more frequently. I once didn’t give myself much leeway. It got excessive.
“Now, if I have a pizza yearning for two days, I will simply eat the pizza and stop thinking about it. I struggled to understand that it wouldn’t change the way my body was. Instead of dwelling on it all week and eventually losing control, I occasionally give myself a small dessert.”
After Amelie Mauresmo in 2005, Garcia became the second French player to win the WTA Finals in November.
Prior to the season’s opening event, the Australian Open, which begins on January 16, Garcia stated that she would like to win a Grand Slam championship in 2023.
