Tennis News: The emotion of being expelled from Australia earlier this year is one Novak Djokovic “can’t forget,” but the Serbian claimed his determination to return for the Grand Slam tournament next month demonstrates the depth of his love for the nation.
Djokovic received a three-year travel restriction when he was deported on the eve of the 2022 Australian Open for not having Covid-19 vaccinations.
The former world number one’s visa suspension was overturned in November, clearing the way for Djokovic to pursue a 10th Australian Open victory and giving him a chance to match Rafa Nadal’s record of 22 Grand Slam victories.
In his first press conference after arriving back in Australia, Djokovic said, “You can’t forget those occurrences; it’s one of those things that stick with you.”
It follows you throughout your entire life. Although it’s something I’ve never done before and hopefully won’t do again, it was a worthwhile learning experience for me.
But I have to move on, and my decision to come back to Australia reflects how I feel about it and about playing here.
Beginning on January 1, Djokovic will compete in the Adelaide International as a warm-up for the Australian Open. He is anticipating a positive response from the home crowd.
“It’s a fantastic place, and the people in Adelaide and in Australia in general love tennis, love sports, and it’s a sporty nation,” said Djokovic. “Hopefully we’ll have a lot of people watching and we can have a good time.”
“I’m praying everything turns out well. It is obviously not something I can foresee. I’ll do my best to play some solid tennis and give the spectators positive vibes and feelings.”
Djokovic claimed that despite what occurred in January, his overall impression of Australia was positive.
Djokovic continued, “What occurred a year ago was difficult to process for a while, but I also had to go on.”
“Those situations won’t be able to match what I have experienced during my career in Melbourne and in Australia.
“I, therefore, arrive with great feelings and am eager to perform there. The outcomes demonstrate that it has been my favourite Grand Slam.”
