Adelaide International Title: Second-seeded In the women’s final of the Adelaide International, Aryna Sabalenka defeated qualifier Linda Noskova 6-2 7-6 (7-4) to win her 11th WTA Tour singles championship but her first in nearly two years.
By doing so, she put an end to the 18-year-old Noskova’s remarkable run. On her road to her first final, Noskova had defeated the third-seeded Daria Kasatkina and the previous Australian Open champion Viktoria Asarenka in the main round.
When Sabalenka won the opening set on Sunday, she hadn’t dropped a set all week and appeared to be headed for another easy victory.
But in the second set, Noskova was much more competitive, holding serve and applying pressure to Sabalenka’s serve, particularly with her potent backhand returns.
Sabalenka stated, “I want to congratulate (Noskova) on a fantastic week. “I think you’re going to have a terrific future and appear in many more finals with 100% accuracy,” she said.
Aryna Sabalenka didn’t win a championship in 2022 despite making three finals; her last singles triumph was won in Madrid in May of 2021.
After being invited to the season-ending WTA Finals in Fort Worth, where she fell to Caroline Garcia in the championship match, she finished the year ranked fifth.
After Shenzen in 2019 and Abu Dhabi in 2021, Sabalenka has now won three tournaments in the first week of a season.
GAUFF WAS SUCCESSFUL IN AUCKLAND
In the rain-affected Auckland Classic final, American Coco Gauff won her first championship of the year by easily defeating Rebeka Masarova, the junior Roland Garros champion.
The top seed won the third championship of her career and first since the 2021 Parma title by not losing a set the entire week.
It’s been fantastic, said Gauff. “Honestly, despite the weather, a terrific week for me; I couldn’t ask for a better start to my season.”
Before the Australian Open, Gauff stated the victory had done wonders for her confidence.
She stated, “Your first week could go well or poorly, you never know how it’s going to go.” But this week has been fantastic.
